First, we can see in this movie a scene of slavery which takes place in 1926 in Gorgia.

The first character Cecil and his parents are working in a cotton field. His mother is raped by their master and his father is shoted because he tries to stand up. This first scene shows us the horrible conditions of Black people in this periode. As a result, he decides to become a butler with the first help of his master's mother and after few years he is hired in the White House for being the butler of the President.

So we can see through the years, different president's politics. First, Eisenhower, with the first evolution : the Brown vs Board of Education which makes segregation illegal in schools. But several states didn't comply the law. After him comes Kennedy and it was the periode when the Civil Rights Act were going to be passed . Then, we can see the Johnson's politics and after him, Nixon and finally Reagan. Anf the film end up with the election of Barack Obama.

To conclude, this film totally represents the evolution of black people condtions in the United States with the appearance of groups like The Lawson Workshop, Freedom Riders, and Black Panthers who fought for their freedom with (or without) violence.

This film is very emotional and powerful and we advise you to see it !
